What Is Truth?
For Dante J. Cutley, the question is less about finding a definitive answer than examining the distance between what is seen, what is believed, and what may actually exist beneath the surface. His work is rooted in curiosity about human nature and the contradictions that shape how people understand themselves, one another, and the world around them.
Dante is drawn to the spaces between opposing ideas: strength and vulnerability, beauty and imperfection, intimacy and isolation, control and surrender. Rather than treating these qualities as contradictions that must be resolved, he allows them to coexist. Within that tension, the photograph becomes more than a record of a person or moment; it becomes an opportunity to question what the viewer believes they understand.
Truth, in Dante’s work, is rarely presented as absolute. Appearance can conceal as much as it reveals. Beauty can contain discomfort. Strength can exist alongside fragility. An ordinary moment can carry unexpected significance. His photographs resist the need to explain these relationships completely, leaving room for uncertainty, interpretation, and the possibility that two seemingly opposing ideas can be true at once.
This approach reflects a broader fascination with human behavior, identity, morality, perception, and individuality. Dante is interested in what people reveal intentionally and unintentionally—the distance between who we believe ourselves to be, how we present ourselves to the world, and what our choices may ultimately reveal about us.
His work also exists within a continuing tension between control and discovery. There are moments when an image is deliberately constructed and others when meaning emerges through instinct, circumstance, or chance. Dante embraces both, recognizing that creating an image and discovering one are different paths toward the same pursuit: seeing beyond what is immediately visible.
Ultimately, Dante does not use photography to tell the viewer what is true. He uses it to create a space in which truth can be questioned. The photograph becomes an invitation to look longer, reconsider first impressions, and bring one’s own experiences into the act of seeing.
The question remains intentionally unresolved:
What is truth?
